COVE HARBOUR
(in memory of the Eyemouth Disaster 1881)
Dazzling sun bright with the breeze carrying them from Cove. Fluttering canvas, breaking of waves, leaving land behind.
The menfolk, steering a course into the wide mouth of the open sea,
to feed their women and bairns
with the harvest of the deep.
From the East they say,
without warning,
came the storm.
Tossing, like jetsam, their cherished boats. Driving them homewards to jagged rocks they knew to fear.
Hulls and bows crushed and splintered, swallowed by the briny broth.
The women and bairns waiting, helpless,
at the harbour wall.
